Dr. Russell’s MS and PhD in biochemistry and nutrition are from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. His medical school training and internship in medicine were at Loma Linda University where he received the graduate Humanitarian Award and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. His residency in internal medicine and fellowship in rheumatology were at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester. He is tenured Associate Professor of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Director of the University Clinical Research Center. In 2009 he was given the title “Master Rheumatologist” by the American College of Rheumatology [ACR].

DR. FRANCISCO J. BLANCO

Dr Francisco J. Blanco has been named President of the OARSI Committee of Investigation and Training.  (Arthrosis Research Society).  He is the first Spaniard to take this position.

OARSI is the most important international scientific organization for doctors and sanitary staff to spread clinical and basic Arthrosis research, aiming to improve the prevention and treatment of this chronic disease.

Dr Blanco, is a Rheumatologist and coordinator of the Research Department of the A Coruña University Hospital Complex, scientific director of the A Coruña Biomedical Research Institute (INIBIC) and spokesman of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology (SER).

From his new position he will direct the investigation initiatives generated by OARSI worldwide.  Likewise, as president of the Investigation and Training Committee, he will be in charge of coordinating all the training activities of the Society.

One of the first actions he will take when leading the Investigation and Training Committee will be the accreditation of centres to train Arthrosis researches and, where member researches of the OARSI will be able to attend.  He will also organise grants for researchers and students who may wish to attend these accredited research centres.
